What to check before replacing windows or doors
Published by Tauro Builders · Updated August 2, 2026Identify the real problem
Drafts, condensation, rot, difficult operation, leaks, damaged trim, and poor comfort can have different causes. The opening should be reviewed before choosing a replacement method.
Understand insert versus full-frame work
An insert may preserve an existing frame when it is sound. Full-frame replacement exposes more of the opening and may be appropriate when there is damage, leakage, or a significant configuration change.
Prioritize water management
Flashing, sill conditions, sealants, drainage, and exterior transitions help protect the wall assembly. Interior trim and insulation should also be included in the scope.
Confirm safety and local requirements
Changes to opening size, bedroom egress, tempered glass locations, structural framing, and certain door conditions may require local review. Requirements are confirmed for the specific property.
